Don’t Make the New Year Old

I will not wish you good luck for the New Year. Not because I don’t care, but because luck has never changed a life that refuses to change itself. I will only remind you of one simple thing, You have already made many years old.

And you did not do it by time passing.

You did it by repeating the same patterns, the same fears, the same postponements, the same promises to yourself that were never kept. So this year, take care of the New Year. Please don’t do to it what you have done to all the others.

Don’t burden it with yesterday.

Don’t poison it with unfinished bitterness.

Don’t drag your old habits into it and then complain that nothing feels new.

A year does not become old because twelve months pass.

It becomes old the moment you stop being present.

Try something radical this year

try to let it be new.

New does not mean bigger goals.

New does not mean more plans.

New does not mean changing the calendar.

New means freshness in how you breathe.

New means honesty in how you live today.

New means meeting this moment without the dust of memory covering your eyes.

If this year truly becomes new, it will not wait till January 1st to feel alive.

It will be new every morning.

Every breath.

Every step.

Because in truth, every day is the beginning of a new year.

Life is never old.

Life is always flowing.

But we hold on to the past so tightly that there is no space left for the present to enter. Look closely at your own life.

Where does the new enter your house from?

Where does the new touch your body?

Where does a fresh ray find space inside you?

You are so busy carrying what has already happened old wounds, old identities, old regrets, old victories that the new has nowhere to land. And then you ask why nothing changes.

The New Year does not ask you to become different.

It only asks you to become available.

Available to this moment.

Available to life as it is.

Available to begin again without dragging yesterday into today. So I won’t wish you good luck. I will wish you something far more demanding;

May you finally loosen your grip on the old.

May you create space.

May you allow life to arrive fresh.

Only then will the New Year remain new.
